The rye of Abu Hureyra
A sudden cold snap may have turned foragers into farmers
This village on the Euphrates in Syria was lived in from 13,300 to 7,800 years ago, and its layers show foragers gradually becoming farmers. When the Younger Dryas cold snap cut their wild cereals some 13,000 years ago, they seem to have started sowing rye, perhaps the first cereal ever cultivated.
