The ʿAin Ghazal statues
Wide-eyed plaster figures, among the first statues of people

In 1983 and 1985 two caches turned up on the edge of Amman: 15 statues and 15 busts of lime plaster over reed frames, about 9,000 years old. The figures, up to about a metre tall, stare with huge outlined eyes, some have two heads, and they seem to have been buried as soon as they were made.
