Around 2050–1900 BC a fortified settlement of the Sintashta culture stood in the steppe of the Southern Urals — two rings of walls lined with houses. It was found in 1987 as the valley was being prepared for a reservoir, and the discovery stopped the flooding; today it also draws esoteric pilgrims.
