In the mid-3rd century BC Arsaces, chief of the nomadic Parni, seized the satrapy of Parthia from Andragoras, who had rebelled against the Seleucids. The Arsacid kings counted their years from 247 BC; their empire lasted almost five centuries and more than once defeated the Romans.
