In 588 Soga no Umako, having defeated the opponents of Buddhism, began building the Hōkō-ji (Asuka-dera) temple at Asuka, Japan's first full Buddhist monastery; it was completed in 596. The bronze Great Buddha of Asuka, cast in 609, still sits there.
