Aurelian walls Rome
For the first time in six centuries Rome fears invasion
After the Juthungi and Alamanni reached northern Italy in 270–271, Aurelian began a brick wall 19 kilometres long around Rome. A city that had not needed walls since the Republic became a fortress again; most of the wall still stands.
