Goths kill Emperor Decius at Abritus
The first Roman emperor killed fighting a foreign enemy
The Goths of King Cniva, who had been ravaging Moesia and Thrace, lured Decius's army into marshy ground near Abritus. The emperor and his son were killed, and the new emperor Trebonianus Gallus let the Goths leave with their plunder and captives and promised them an annual payment.
