Battle of Bạch Đằng
Stakes in a riverbed end a thousand years of Chinese rule

Ngô Quyền drove iron-tipped stakes into the bed of the Bạch Đằng, hidden by the high tide, and lured the fleet of the Southern Han there. As the tide ebbed, the ships were impaled and destroyed. The victory ended more than a thousand years of Chinese rule, and Vietnam became independent.
