Battle of Pliska
Khan Krum annihilates Emperor Nikephoros's army

Emperor Nikephoros I sacked the Bulgar capital Pliska, but on the way back, on 26 July 811, Khan Krum trapped his army in a mountain pass and destroyed it. Nikephoros was killed, the first emperor to fall in battle since Valens in 378; legend says Krum made his skull into a cup.
