Ashurbanipal destroys Susa
Assyria avenges centuries of war by levelling Elam's capital

In 647 BC the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal took Susa, the capital of Elam, plundered its palaces and treasuries and destroyed the ziggurat. In his inscription he boasts of wrecking the tombs of the Elamite kings and carrying their bones to Assyria; Elam never recovered.
