King Rajaraja I of the Chola dynasty completed a vast Shiva temple in his capital. Its granite vimana, about 66 metres high, was among the tallest structures of its time, and its walls are covered with inscriptions on gifts and temple staff. With two other Chola temples, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
