A fleet commander rules Britain apart from Rome for a decade

Carausius, who commanded the Channel fleet against Frankish and Saxon pirates, was accused of keeping the plunder and in 286 declared himself emperor in Britain. He struck coins with lines from Virgil; in 293 his treasurer Allectus murdered him, and in 296 the forces of Constantius Chlorus recovered the island.
