Pericles and Phidias crown the Acropolis with a masterpiece

At Pericles' initiative a temple to Athena Parthenos rose on the Athenian Acropolis, designed by Ictinus and Callicrates with sculpture overseen by Phidias. The Parthenon became the high point of classical Greek architecture.
