Between about 27,000 and 19,000 years ago people near today's Marseille painted horses, bison, seals and great auks and left hand stencils in a cave, when the sea stood more than 100 m lower. Diver Henri Cosquer found the entrance in 1985; the find was announced in 1991, after three divers lost their way in the tunnel and died.
