Greeks found Massalia
The Phocaean colony, future Marseille, opens Gaul to the Greeks

Around 600 BC Greeks from Ionian Phocaea founded Massalia near the mouth of the Rhône. Legend says the colonists' leader Protis married Gyptis, daughter of the local king, and received the land as her dowry; the city became the chief Greek port of the western Mediterranean.
