The Gwanggaeto Stele
A six-metre chronicle of a Goguryeo king's conquests

In 414 King Jangsu raised a stone stele more than six metres high over the tomb of his father, Gwanggaeto the Great. Some 1,800 characters recount the campaigns that made Goguryeo the leading power of Korea and Manchuria. Rediscovered in the 1880s, its passage about the Wa of Japan is still argued over by Korean, Japanese and Chinese historians.
