In Kapova Cave (Shulgan-Tash in Bashkir) in the Southern Urals, mammoths, horses, a woolly rhino, a bison, a Bactrian camel and geometric signs are painted in ochre. The images are at least 14,000–19,000 years old — the easternmost Ice Age cave art in Europe. Pyotr Rychkov described the cave in the 18th century, but the paintings were only noticed in 1959 by the zoologist Alexander Ryumin.
