In 1996 the skeleton of a man who lived 8,400–8,700 years ago was found on the bank of the Columbia River in Washington State. Some scientists argued he was unrelated to Native Americans and fought tribes in court for nearly twenty years to study him; in 2015 DNA showed he was closest to Native Americans after all, and in 2017 he was reburied.
