Kerma, the first kingdom of Kush
Nubia's first kingdom, a rival of Egypt, built of mud brick
Around 2500 BC the centre of the first Nubian state, the kingdom of Kush with its capital at Kerma, took shape at the Third Cataract of the Nile. Its huge mud-brick temple, the Western Deffufa, still stands, and royal mounds hold hundreds of people buried with the ruler. Around 1500 BC Kerma was conquered by the Egyptian pharaoh Thutmose I.
