A notched baboon bone, perhaps the first tally

Border Cave, on the border of South Africa and Eswatini, yielded an 8 cm baboon fibula cut with notches, dated by 24 radiocarbon tests to 42,000–43,000 years ago. It is often called one of the oldest tally sticks, though nobody knows what was being counted: days, kills or something else.
