Fish-faced stone heads on the banks of the Danube

Lepenski Vir
Wikimedia Commons

Foragers and fishers lived at the Danube's Iron Gates as early as 9500–7200 BC, and around 6300–6000 BC they built trapezoid houses and carved boulders into sculptures with half-human, half-fish faces. Before a dam reservoir flooded the valley, the whole site was moved up the slope in the early 1970s.
