Mal'ta and Buret'
Ice Age "Venuses" and flying swans near Lake Baikal

In 1927 Mikhail Gerasimov, later famous for rebuilding faces from skulls, began digging at the village of Mal'ta near Irkutsk. About 24,000 years ago people here lived in semi-sunken houses and carved mammoth ivory into birds in flight and some 30 female figurines, some in hooded fur clothing.
