The Maykop kurgan
A chief under a canopy of gold and silver bulls
In 1897 archaeologist Nikolai Veselovsky excavated a kurgan about 11 m high on the edge of Maykop. A chief of the 4th millennium BC lay beneath a canopy whose poles carried figurines of bulls in gold and silver, his clothes sewn with hundreds of gold plaques shaped like lions and bulls.
