The Nabta Playa stone circle
A Saharan calendar far older than Stonehenge
Herders came to a seasonal lake in the Nubian Desert from about 7500 BC, and some 7,000 years ago they set up a ring of stones, some of which seem to line up with sunrise at the summer solstice. It is among the oldest known astronomical structures, some two thousand years older than Stonehenge.
