Founding of Nalanda
A university that drew students from all over Asia

The Buddhist monastery of Nalanda was founded under the Gupta king Kumaragupta I, around 427 by various estimates. It grew into a vast centre of learning with dormitories, temples and a famous library; Chinese pilgrims report thousands of monks from China, Korea, Tibet and Indonesia living and studying there. Around 1200 Nalanda was sacked by the troops of Bakhtiyar Khalji.
