The Novgorod Republic
Novgorod expels its prince and the veche takes power
In 1136 Novgorod expelled Prince Vsevolod and began choosing for itself whom to invite as prince. Real power passed to the veche assembly, the posadnik and the archbishop. The rich trading city, linked to the Hanseatic League, stayed a republic for more than three centuries, until Moscow annexed it in 1478.
