Some 4,500 figures are carved into rocks on the eastern shore of Lake Onega and near Belomorsk, made between 7,000 and 4,000 years ago: beluga hunts, skiers, boats and swans. The most famous is a two-metre "Demon" at Cape Besov Nos, which medieval monks tried to neutralise by carving a cross over it.
