The settlement of Samoa
Lapita sherds under water, the first trace of people on Samoa
In 1973, dredging at the Mulifanua ferry berth on Upolu brought up thousands of Lapita pottery sherds. The now-submerged settlement is dated to around 800 BC, the oldest trace of people on Samoa. Samoa and Tonga later sent out the voyagers who settled all of Polynesia.
