Shangshan and early rice
Rice husks in the clay: first steps toward paddy fields
Sites of the Shangshan culture in Zhejiang, 11,400–8,600 years old, have some of China's earliest pottery, tempered with rice husks, along with early house remains. Rice was gathered here and apparently on its way to domestication, the start of a road to the paddies that now feed half of humanity.
