Statue of Zeus at Olympia
A 12-metre god of gold and ivory

The sculptor Phidias made a seated Zeus about 12 metres tall for the temple at Olympia, of ivory and gold over a wooden frame. It was said that if the god stood up he would go through the roof. The statue, one of the Seven Wonders, was lost in the 5th century AD, either in a fire at the temple or later in Constantinople.
