The Tărtăria tablets
Writing older than Sumer's, or a mix-up in the layers?
In 1961 three clay tablets bearing Vinča symbols were found in Transylvania. If the date from associated finds, about 5300 BC, holds, they predate Sumerian pictographs by two millennia, but many scholars doubt which layer the tablets really came from.
