The Lapita cemetery at Teouma
The oldest known cemetery in the Pacific Islands
In 2003 a cemetery of Vanuatu's first settlers, Lapita people who arrived about 3,000 years ago, was found near Teouma Bay on Efate. It is the oldest known cemetery in the Pacific Islands. Decorated Lapita pots lay with the dead, and many skeletons lacked their skulls, which seem to have been removed after burial.
