In 1938 Alexei Okladnikov found the skull of a Neanderthal child aged 8 to 11 in a mountain cave in southern Uzbekistan. Five pairs of Siberian ibex horns lay around it, and the find was hailed as a ritual burial, though sceptics note that the cave held more than 700 ibex bones in all.
