Emperor Lý moves his capital to the Red River

Lý Thái Tổ, founder of the Lý dynasty, decreed the move of the capital from mountain-girt Hoa Lư to Đại La on the Red River and named the city Thăng Long, 'Ascending Dragon'. It remained Vietnam's capital for almost eight centuries and is today Hanoi, which celebrated its millennium in 2010.
