Fall of Tikal
Calakmul and Caracol defeat the mightiest Maya city
In 562 the ruler of Caracol, an ally of the Kaanul kingdom (Calakmul), crushed Tikal; Tikal's king Wak Chan K'awiil was probably sacrificed. Tikal entered its 'hiatus' — more than a century without new inscriptions — and Calakmul became the leading Maya power.
