Sergius of Radonezh founds his monastery
A forest hermitage becomes Moscow's spiritual centre

Around 1337 Sergius of Radonezh built a small wooden Trinity church in the forest. His community grew into the largest monastery in Rus', and tradition says Sergius blessed Dmitry Donskoy before the Battle of Kulikovo. The Trinity Lavra is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
