In 2008 a 6 cm figurine of a woman, carved from mammoth ivory 42,000–40,000 years ago, turned up in a cave in southern Germany. Instead of a head it has a loop for wearing on a cord, and the same cave yielded a flute made from a vulture bone, one of the oldest musical instruments.
