Wari Empire
The first Andean empire, eight centuries before the Inca

Around 600, a state centred on Huari brought much of the Peruvian Andes and coast under its control. The Wari built administrative centres to a standard plan and laid roads and terraces, much of which the Inca later inherited. By various estimates the capital housed tens of thousands of people. The state broke up around 1000.
