Tradition says the Han emperor Ming dreamed of a golden deity and sent envoys to the west. They returned with the Indian monks Kāśyapa Mātaṅga and Dharmaratna, who brought sutras on white horses. In 68 a temple was built for them near Luoyang, regarded as the first Buddhist temple in China.
