The Yuzhny Oleny burial ground
Onega hunters whose genes reached the steppe and Sweden

On an island in Lake Onega, hunters buried their dead about 8,000 years ago with pendants of elk and beaver teeth; in the 1930s archaeologists excavated more than 170 graves. Their DNA became the reference for "Eastern Hunter-Gatherers", whose genes later passed to the Yamnaya herders and to early Scandinavians.
