A Chinese emperor took offence at Japan over the sun. In 607 Prince Shōtoku wrote to him: 'The Son of Heaven where the sun rises, to the Son of Heaven where the sun sets.' Emperor Yang was furious.

• Hōryū-ji temple is founded607 · Ikaruga, Japan. Prince Shōtoku founded the temple in 607. According to the Nihon Shoki it burned after a lightning strike in 670 and was rebuilt soon after; its main hall, at least 1,300 years old, is considered the oldest wooden building on Earth.
