For decades scientists saw traces of one of the biggest eruptions in thousands of years in Greenland and Antarctic ice without knowing where the volcano was. Only in 2013 was it found: Samalas on Lombok, 1257.

The event

• Samalas eruption1257 · Lombok, Indonesia. In 1257 Samalas on Lombok exploded in one of the strongest eruptions in millennia, destroying the capital Pamatan. Its trace is found in ice at both poles; Europe's cold summer of 1258 and mass graves in London may be linked to it.
