One of Stonehenge's stones seems to have come from Scotland, nearly 700 km away.

A 2024 study matched the Altar Stone to rocks of north-east Scotland; it had long been thought to come from Wales.

• Building of Stonehengec. 3000 BC–2000 BC · Salisbury Plain. Neolithic Britons began a circular sanctuary on Salisbury Plain, raising its giant sarsen stones around 2500 BC. Aligned with the solstice sunrise and sunset, it is the most famous prehistoric monument in Europe.
