The Council of Pisa deposed the rival popes of Rome and Avignon and elected a third, but the other two refused to go. The schism ended only in 1417.

• Avignon Papacy1309–1377 · Avignon. In 1309 Pope Clement V moved his residence to Avignon, placing the papacy under strong French influence. The popes returned to Rome only in 1377, shortly before the Western Schism.
