• Calling of the Varangiansc. 862 · Novgorod. According to the Primary Chronicle, Slavic and Finnic tribes invited the Varangian Rurik to rule over them. Chronicle tradition dates the beginning of Rus' and of the Rurikid dynasty, which ruled for over seven centuries, to this event.
• Mission of Cyril and Methodius863 · Great Moravia. The Byzantine missionary brothers Cyril and Methodius arrived in Great Moravia to preach in the Slavic tongue. The alphabet they devised and the liturgical books they translated laid the foundations of Slavic literacy and literature.
