Emperor Kanmu
737 – 806 · 69 years · Heian-kyō (Kyoto) · Asia
Reign: 781 – 806 (Japan: shoguns & emperors)
Reigned 781–806. To escape the grip of Nara's Buddhist temples he moved the capital to Nagaoka (784) and then, in 794, to Heian-kyō, which stayed the capital for over a thousand years; he sent Sakanoue no Tamuramaro against the Emishi in the north.
