Eastern Jin was the Jin empire after the loss of northern China: in 317–318 Sima Rui, a member of the ruling house, proclaimed himself king and then emperor at Jiankang (Nanjing). The dynasty held the south, defeated the Former Qin army at the Fei River (383) and fell in 420, when the general Liu Yu founded the Liu Song empire.
