Kingdom of Italy
The Kingdom of Italy covered northern and central Italy, with its centre at Pavia, as the successor of the Lombard kingdom conquered by Charlemagne in 774. After the Carolingian Empire broke up in 888 its crown was contested by local margraves and Burgundian kings, until Otto I took it in 951–962 and the kingdom became part of the Holy Roman Empire.
