Principality of Wallachia
The Principality of Wallachia was a state between the Southern Carpathians and the Danube, formed around 1310; in 1330 Basarab I secured its independence from Hungary at the Battle of Posada. From the 15th century it paid tribute to the Ottoman Empire while keeping its own princes, and in 1859 it united with Moldavia to form Romania.
