The Aghlabids rule Ifriqiya
The caliph grants Ifriqiya as a hereditary governorship
In 800 Caliph Harun al-Rashid made Ibrahim ibn al-Aghlab governor of Ifriqiya with the right to pass power to his heirs. Acknowledging only Baghdad's suzerainty, the Aghlabids ruled from Kairouan for over a century, conquered Sicily and were overthrown by the Fatimids in 909.
